Medievals are not my favorite romances, mostly because that time period--despite all of Queen Eleanor's "courtly romance"--was violent and uncertain and not really romantic. Even a noblewoman could not expect much happiness in marriage, as most were married off at a young age in trade for land or money or influence and then treated as chattel by husbands who could treat them as harshly as they wished with no consequences.Marguerite was, for the most part, a level-headed young lady. She ran her father's household successfully for many years, and even at the court of Westminster with her friends, she did not sigh over handsome courtiers or behave in any way beneath the dignity of a noble young maiden. A part of her may have yearned for a bit of adventure, but when she found herself forced into marriage with a near stranger who clearly wanted only her inheritance, well, that wasn't exactly what she expected.
It wasn't that he was cruel or anything. He didn't beat her nor mistreat her in any way. He was courteous and respectful and appreciative of her efforts in keeping the castle and its occupants in good order. On more than one occasion, in fact, Marguerite reflected that it would have been easier if he had been cruel and thoughtless, since she could have protected her heart from being crushed by his indifference. But after she found herself falling in love with him, his very indifference had the power to slay through her like a sword.
But if that were not enough, it turns out that her husband Roland is in love with the beautiful Isabelle, his former fiancée, who sports the ruby bracelet that Marguerite learns is part of her husband's family jewels. Marguerite seems to be the last to learn of their ongoing affair, even when it is carried on in her own household. He spends months at a time away from her with no explanation, except for the one occasion where he did openly tell her he was going to visit Isabelle. Marguerite goes through many dark days feeling like the unwanted third wheel, and there are those in the castle who warn her that her days are numbered, that her husband is a violent man who has killed before for material gain.
I have to say that I was never sure until the end that this story could turn out well for Marguerite. I kept on reading because I was impressed with her strength and determination. . . and loyalty in the face of so much betrayal. It was an emotional roller coaster not unlike Gabaldon's Outlander series. It was nearly impossible to wrench myself away from it in time to make my hair appointment, and I must confess I broke a speed limit or two coming home afterward to finish the last chapter.
In real life, women like Marguerite could not ask for their husbands' love or respect. It was enough that they were well-fed and clothed, I guess, and that their husbands did not treat them cruelly. I suppose the common women would think themselves fortunate indeed to have as much. But from my perspective, well, life in the Middle Ages pretty much sucked, even for queens.

My Lord Roland edition by Julie Tetel Andresen Romance eBooks Reviews
The heroine goes on and on (and on) about inane garbage no one cares about. I mean this book could have been 1/2 the length. Regardless, every page involving Roland was good-probably because her mindless babbling ceased or decreased anyway. I enjoyed the romance, and liked both characters, just wish it had been shorter. I almost stopped reading before the second chapter, but finally started skimming, as I thought it has to get better, in that regard I was not disappointed.
I loved this story. It was complex and rich in detail. It left the love scenes to your imagination and although I would have liked a bit more description of their intimacy, this one effected me deeply because of the depth and richness of detail (surroundings as well as feelings). I usually rush through a lot of the detail in the sex scenes because if you've read one you've read most... but I found myself wanting to read every word in this story and I didn't want to let go of the characters when the story ended. I re-read the last few chapters and will probably read this book again soon. I look forward to reading more of her stories. This is more of a literary work than your typical romance novel in my opinion. Give yourself time to read it so you can enjoy the rich details of the journey.
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written. The author made the reader connect with the charaters. Poor Marguerite to fall in love with Roland and throughout the story he seems to be sleeping with Isabelle who used to be hid fiance who turns out to a killer. Marguerite does not reaize she has at least three admires. Sir Hugh falls in love with her. Alica her best friend reminds her that Roland is in love with her. Would read this again.
My Lord Roland is a great combination of gothic romance and mystery. Marguerite hates herself for being so weak as to love a man she is forced to marry after her father dies in most unexpected circumstances. Everyone assumes Lord Roland is not only still in love with his former betrothed, but is also guilty of killing his brother for his land. Although she wanted to believe he is innocent, all the evidence points to his guilt. I admit that the beginning was a bit slow, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. Very unpredictable and intriguing.
I initially did not like how plodding this book started out. Matter of fact, I was having a very tough time even wanting to continue reading it, and had actually stopped reading several times because it took so long to get into the "meat" of the story. And yet, I'm very glad I persevered. I won't lie, there were pages I skimmed, but the overall plot was well done.
I love historicals, and I understand the need for world building to set the tone and feel...I just think the book was a little heavy handed with the pages and pages of details she used to explain what the heroine thought and felt. But again, the story itself was good and the characters were believable.
I found it hard to feel any real chemistry between the characters .. they all had cold relationships with no clear communication .... chapters after chapter went on endlessly describing every minute of every day in elaborate detail .. It became very tedious ..
This book devastated me. Intrigue, passion and mystery, all tied up with excellent historical research, authentic language and really good characterization. Best medieval type book I've read, and the author clearly did the footwork in research and stayed consistent, making the era come alive again.
The protagonist is lovable, and you can't help empathizing with the simple good hearted woman who is out of her depth in the tangle of court intrigues that sweep her up. The hero is every bit the dark, brooding and layered character you love-hate-desire. This is the kind of book that stays with you long after you put it down, so read it when you can focus on all the layers without being distracted.
