I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Roamer and Maple Jack. To me Matt Mayo's writing is reminiscent of my all time favorite western author Louis LaMour. Looking forward to reading more of the Roamer series.

After a very long wait, Matthew P. Mayo has finally delivered the follow-up to his excellent 2008 novel Wrong Town. Of all the author's novels (I believe there are a couple I haven't read yet), his distinctly ugly hero Scorfano, who goes by the nickname Roamer, is probably his best character. A beady-eyed giant of a man (6ft 4 inches) with a cleft lip and the sort of unattractive facial features that put ordinary townsfolk on edge, he is also a learned, bookish type, and a morally decent chap. A sort of well-meaning outcast trying to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, trouble always finds him.

In the previous book, he was mauled by a grizzly bear, then robbed by bandits while pinned underneath its lifeless carcass, and later jailed for a murder he didn’t commit. In this new adventure, North of Forsaken, set three years later, he suffers similar misfortune.

A chance encounter with his younger brother, Thomas, whom he hasn’t seen for fifteen years, results in him getting assaulted and imprisoned on trumped up charges. Bailed out of jail by Thomas, he feels obligated to help his brother locate deeded property he has recently inherited.

So begins an action-packed, highly dangerous journey through northern Wyoming with the luckless Roamer pursued by a gang of vicious bandits led by a heinous battle-axe of a woman.

Luckily, his old friend Maple Jack, an irritable old-timer who lives a reclusive life in his cabin in the mountains, accompanies him on this journey. Jack looms large in this tale -- he's regularly in Roamer's thoughts and, when he does eventually show up, he rather steals the show, providing some welcome humor and memorable moments.

I very much hope there will be a third Roamer book before long. And if Maple Jack does feature in it, I hope he plays a slightly smaller role and doesn't overshadow Mayo's wonderfully unique lead character.
great story,leaves you wanting more. this author can really get you hooked.
Just finished my first Roamer western in 3 days. Could not put it down and look forward to my next Roamer adventure.
